I started off this painting with the girl chihuahua all planned out. She was going to be snuggling next to a boy chihuahua, but I was listening to Sinatra/Martin/Davis Jr on Pandora and Rosemary Clooney came on singing about Lola. It's pretty perfect, had to do it! "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. And little man, Little Lola wants you..."

I figured this little Mountain Chickadee needed a good solid rocker chick song. Who better than Pat Benatar? She's ready to rock and roll!
"Birdette" is a term I coined with major help from my friend Kris. It has come to be defined as, "little bird standing front and center with a happy disposition, loving salutations and a twinkle in his/her eye". I'd say this wee bitty Mountain Chickadee quite fits the bill! Dark-Eyed Juncos are super cute. They look like small versions of a Towhee. You can tell the difference between male and female by the color of their hoods. The female has a lighter, brown-grey head. My male Junco here is giving his lady the up-and-down eyebrows, like "hubba hubba! it's just you and me, sweetie!" And my female Junco is just so happy:)
There is nothing better in life than to be surrounded by people (or owls) whom you love and who love you. In a world that is often hectic and full of stress, a moment shared with family or friends is always a blessing.
To me, “Love The One You’re With” doesn’t means: Settle for who is in the vicinity. It means: Search out the ones you love, and make sure they know each and every day that they are loved by you and you know they love you too! Nothing could be finer than being with the one you love, having a place to rest your wings and ample food to be consume at your leisure, right? Well, if I was one of these American Robins, I'd be pretty content right about now. I love how the lady robin is sunbathing and taking in all the joy. And the male robin is fixated on the food. Like my mama always says, "the way to a man's heart is thru his
This is a funny one for me. It started out with the quick thought, "I made a great sign for Hawaii, I should make a great sign for Tahoe!" So I looked around and found this cool South Lake Tahoe sign and started painting it. But the picture I referenced was closely cropped, so I decided I needed to check out more pictures with larger context. Did I mention that I had already painted the sign portion and was really just looking for the background feel? Oh, and did I also mention that I had submitted my purchase order to the gallery with the painting on the order listed as "Chickadee with Tahoe sign"?.... When I researched a little more, I found that the sign is actually huge! I was thinking it would be about the size of a small store sign or welcome mat, maybe? But no, the "O" in "TAHOE" is actually larger than an adult man's head. I had planned to place a big fat chickadee square on the left side of the sign, tilting over and looking all cute. He would've been a Godzilla Chickadee! So I measured it out a bit and made my chickadee just a wee but larger than reality. I think he came out just right after all!
I love signs and I love maps. I love birds and flowers too, so this painting has everything my heart could desire! The little bird perched so preciously on the Hawaii map sign is a Java Sparrow. He looks so dashing in his grey-blue tuxedo! He brought along a red Hibiscus, I thought it fitting that my little Java should be presenting it as a welcoming gift to you. Aloha!
Nothing better than a little kiss while wading in your favorite pond and dining on fresh crab or fish. These funny birds are 'Ae'o or Hawaiian Stilts. They have cute little bodies, slender curvy necks and shocking pink legs for miles. But their best feature (to me, at least) is the signature white eyebrow that lends them a constant inquisitive look. Love these birds! Check out more about conservation efforts in Hawaii for our endemic birds: Only this Ramones song would suffice... The 'Akohekohe is a funny looking bird. They have a rockin' white crest and polka dots all over. With all this flair, 'Akohekohes are difficult to miss, but unfortunately, they are very close to extinction. Hawaii conservation organizations are working hard to bring up numbers by protecting habitats, removing invasive plants and predators like rats and mongoose. My 'Akohekohe pair are blissfully enjoying a beautiful day with sweet Lehua blossoms and kisses that would lift you off your feet. To see what Hawaii conservationists are doing to help our birds, visit: The 'Amakihi is an endemic Hawaiian honeycreeper located in Maui, Moloka'i and Hawaii. These little guys are adaptive and have been able to survive as a "least concern" on the endangered list. The 'Amakihi's beak is perfect for siping nectar out of tubular flowers and for making Ke Aloha hearts. These two kissy faces are enjoying themselves with the fragrant plumerias sheltering them from the hot Hawaiian sun. |
