Look at this sweet face! Golden Retrievers are known for their friendliness, loyalty and enthusiasm. They are always ready to play ball, eat your leftovers when you aren't looking and provide an upturned belly when you need some love and comfort. He's a true pal, more than you could ever ask for.
Sometimes you just need a new perspective and everything falls into place.
Our little Chihuahua friend is trying to make sense of it all, and tilting his head ever so slightly seems to make everything better. "Kapakahi" is a Hawaiian word meaning crooked, askew or out of sync. In this painting, I'm referring to his ears, one up and one sideways...
I love when I talk to my dog (which is all the time) and he does the head-tilt. I will often just say things is an inquiring tone so that he will look at me with his big dewy eyes, cock his head to the side and really weigh my question’s merit to the fullest. The most important factor to him is probably whether or not finding the answer is rewarded with a treat. Gotta love that he’s got priorities and ambition!
A year or so ago, I painted an adorable Westie with a butterfly on his nose. I had an itch to recreate that design with another dog and chose the Papillon. He's a perfect fit, especially with his large ears and fur tendrils that inspired the species' name (French for "butterfly").
My Papillon is intrigued and surprised to find a beautiful monarch delicately kisses to top of his wet nose. Some friendships blossom out of the most unexpected moments of tenderness.
Esta is a bulldog mix and she's adorable! As a birthday present, I made this portrait for Anita and she suggested having the surf and black sand of Pololu in the background. With Esta, I wanted to make sure all of her spots were accounted for and I almost missed the cutest spot: the freckle under her eye. Once I added her eye freckle, it all came together! I imagine she's taking a breather on the beach, a perfect moment to take a picture, and then she will be off and running! Oh what fun to be a dog!
I love creating pet portraits for people like me who adore their pets and cherish them as the family that they are...
This coming Thursday, I will get to meet Bruce because I will be painting in the Signature/DeRubeis Gallery at Ko'olina from 3-7pm. Come say "hi!" if you are on Oahu!
I had a lot of fun painting Kirby here. I learned a lot as well. I didn't know that Mini Pinschers (and the larger version too) vary in color from black to rufous red-brown. Initially, I painted Kirby with a black coat and then realized that he has the rufous tone. From the get go, we (clients Dorothy, Johanna and I) wanted to put the flowers in the background. I had to improvise on the ground because I didn't have a picture with the floor in view. It looks like young Kirby here is having a great day in the sun. He gets his picture taken, gets to smell the beautiful flowers and warm himself on the sunny patio stones. What a handsome boy!
When my friend Kris brought home Lucy Belle, a mini schnauzer-pinscher pup, Uggi (my Pom-Chi-Terrier mix) and I were so excited! The dream was, "oh it'll be so nice to wake up when the air is cool, walk in the morning and get exercise, socialize the dogs together. How lovely!"
In reality it goes a little more like this:
5:30- Uggi wakes up, gets off the bed and proceeds to pace back and forth, crying and begging with his unbreakable stare
5:45- still there by the bedside... waiting...
6:00- make some louder pleas just in case I've fallen back asleep
6:15- nudges the bed... make sure I'm not dead
6:30- alright alright! I'm up!! Time to go!! Lucy and Kris are here, c'mon c'monnnn!
That's how it all starts. Then it's off we go, a parade of four, making stops for every weed, stone and rockwall that crosses our path. But the best part is sadly the end of our walk. Lucy and Uggi know the end is nigh, face each other and proceed to give sweet kisses goodbye.
Now that's the proper way to start your day!
Chihuahuas are so small and wonderful! There is nothing more lovely than cuddling up with a tiny pooch who gives you little kisses and tons of love. These two look so happy together. In fact the one on the left looks a little love-drunk.
I started off this painting with the girl chihuahua all planned out. She was going to be snuggling next to a boy chihuahua, but I was listening to Sinatra/Martin/Davis Jr on Pandora and Rosemary Clooney came on singing about Lola. It's pretty perfect, had to do it!
"Whatever Lola wants,
And little man,
Little Lola wants you..."
Toy poodles are awesome. They are super smart, super tiny and have really poofy hair. These two are the life of the party. Just waiting to get things started. If they had a party, I would definitely be there.
