Love me some chickens, the bigger the better! I chose the Wyandotte hen because she has these big white spots on her feathers that are surrounded by black edges. There are now many variations of Wyandotte chickens, but they originated from this black and white combo. One of the most endearing characteristics of this chicken breed is the mother hen's loving devotion to her babies. Don't mess with Mama!

What can I say? I like kisses. I like birds. I like kissy birds! These two are 'Anianiau, Hawaiian honeycreepers, are sharing a kiss in a plumeria tree. Usually the 'Anianiau stay up in higher elevation forest trees like Koa and take nectar from the Ohia Lehua blossom. But who's to say they can't sneak away for a little coastal rendezvous every once in awhile? Let's give them some privacy please! "Say it's me that you'll adore, for now and evermore... That's all..." The Red-Crested Cardinal is in fact not a true cardinal. They actually belong to the tanager family, but their red Santa hats make them appear to be of the cardinal family. We have these funny birds all over Hawaii. They were introduced from Central/South America and have acclimated rather comfortably. I see this Red-Crested Cardinal patiently waiting for his lady to find him. And then he will love and cherish her like no other! Just watching the Lions/Eagles game is making me chilly today! Good thing I painted these wonderfully warm Golden Crowned Kinglets with their friend the Golden Rod flower. They are sitting pretty, all puffed up and ready to snuggle. Kinglets are known for their small round stature but they are constantly in motion. Everyone needs a break and these two are taking a break in style! If you like bright colors, than this is the painting for you! I kind of shocked myself with this shocking pink background! My Java Sparrows don't seem to be phased at all. They are ready for a perfect Hawaiian breakfast feast of juicy pineapple. Java Sparrows are crafty birds and they can maneuver over any obstacle to get some grub. I don't know how they're getting into the pokey skin of this pineapple, but I have no doubt that they will find a way! It's lovely to be in Hawaii! We have an adorable greeter who found the perfect sign to wish you a welcome stay here in Hawaii:) This is a Japanese White-Eye, and he's perched on this welcoming aloha sign hung in the nearby plumeria tree. In Hawaii, it is customary to bring a lei for our visitors arriving in the islands as an invitation of love and happiness. Our White-Eye friend decided to bring the whole tree! I think I will have to start a series of welcome signs/mats because these are just too fun! "Three Little Birds" is a great concept and I used it in another larger painting a while back. I had some requests to make another welcome mat, so "Three Little Birds (2)" came to life. This time I chose the rasta colors, but in a different combination. Red is 'Apapane birds, Green & Yellow are the welcome mat and I used yellow also as an undercoat for the whitewashed floorboards. Today I have an overwhelming feeling that every little thing I gonna be alright:) I have been in high gear these last few weeks, preparing for the holiday season! It's always a little crazy during this time, so today I created a peaceful oasis with my tiny saffron finch friend and some luscious plumeria. Even when there seems to be no time to waste, you have to allow yourself some getaway time! I have compiled loads of sketchbooks and tons of sketches over the years. Especially this last year, I really bulked up my drawing time to help me compose paintings and keep things fresh. So when Wyland Waikiki asked for pineapple, I already had some ideas involving a pineapple of two... The composition I finally chose showcases a juicy, ripe pineapple listing to the right with an 'Akohekohe gripping the pineapple's side. I decided an 'Akohekohe would be a perfect friend for this pineapple since they share the same hairdo! What a cute pair they make!! Kisses are always wonderful:) Chickadees are very lovable, curious birds. They are quicker to trust than most birds, especially if food is involved. For this chickadee pair, kisses are best served on a bright branch of purple bougainvillea. As I always say: you can never give nor get enough kisses from the one you love! |
